This has been a busy year for the National Register of Historic Places program in Pennsylvania. So far, 23 properties in 12 counties have been listed in the National Register this year, including the Mifflin Farm, future home of the Susquehanna Discovery Center & Heritage Park.
If you are road-tripping in Pennsylvania this summer, add a stop to the Just Listed! Mifflin Farm on your itinerary. Located in Wrightsville, the property was an important way station on the Underground Railroad. Freedom seekers sheltered at the house with Quakers Jonathan and Susanna Wright Mifflin before attempting the dangerous crossing of the Susquehanna River and continuing their journey north. Many crossed the river at night by rowboat, aided by Robert Loney, a Virginian who experienced the horrors of enslavement firsthand as a child.
Later, on June 28, 1863, the property witnessed fighting during the pivotal Battle of Wrightsville, which prevented Confederate forces from crossing the Susquehanna River and contributed to the events that led to the Battle of Gettysburg.
Only nine years ago, the Mifflin Farm was threatened with demolition and placed on the “Pennsylvania At Risk” list. Now, thanks to grassroots activism and the work of the Susquehanna National Heritage Area, The Conservation Fund, and Preservation Pennsylvania, the property has been saved for future generations. The site is being developed into the Susquehanna Discovery Center & Heritage Park, which will feature an Underground Railroad learning center, art museum, and heritage park. The property opened to the public for the first time in its history in 2025.
This summer, the Mifflin Farm is open to the public on Saturdays with guided tours offered three times a day. Check out their website for more details and see below for information on all Just Listed properties!
