So, you are enjoying the delights of the Farm Show and you misplaced your spouse and kids. Where to find them? At the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission booth at the 2018 Farm Show? Maybe not, but you might find older generations of your family there. Continue reading

Do you know what happens when a PHMC marker is damaged by a delivery truck, plowed over after a snowstorm or original 1946 blue and gold paint resembles the make-up of a faded movie star? Do you think PHMC throws out the markers and orders a new one? Continue reading
The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC) is pleased to announce the recent addition of two datasets to OpenDataPA: Pennsylvania Historical Markers and the 1850 Agricultural Production in Pennsylvania. Wondering what datasets and open data have to do with the PA SHPO? Lots, apparently.
As the summer of 2017 begins a new group of students and perhaps future preservationists have arrived at the PA State Historic Preservation Office (PA SHPO) to participate in the PHMC Keystone Summer Internship Program or the collaborative PennDOT/PA SHPO cultural resource management internship program. I am happy to announce that the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission recently approved 18 new historical markers!
As you’ll see from the list below, over half of the approved subjects are for markers in Philadelphia County. The Marker Program encourages broad distribution, so we’d love to see more individuals and organizations from Pennsylvania’s other 66 counties research their history and develop nominations for people, places, events, and innovations in their own backyard. One of the honors of serving on the Pennsylvania Historic Preservation Board is the opportunity to represent the Commonwealth at historical marker dedications. I met some true marker scavenger hunters at one of these dedications and wanted to share their story. Interested in doing some marker hunting of your own? Take a trip to Harrisburg this week for PHMC’s annual Marker Scavenger Hunt inside the Farm Show Complex! Continue reading
2016 flew like a flash! I can’t believe its time for the 101st Pennsylvania Farm Show already. Although my head remains full of visions of dancing sugar-plums, staff at the State Historic Preservation Office have been busy getting ready for our booth at the PA Farm Show.
Question: What do Albert M. Greenfield, Eddie Adams, and Mr. Rogers have in common? One was a Philly businessman, politician, and influential member of the Planning Commission. Another was a Westmoreland County native who won a Pulitzer Prize for his photojournalism of the Vietnam War. And who doesn’t know Mr. Rogers, whose show on PBS stations everywhere taught us all about being good neighbors? Continue reading
We’re all looking for ways to cool off these days – this heat wave is one for the records! Grab your iced tea, sit next to the AC, and take a few minutes to read this month’s PA SHPO Shout Out. We’ll cover an unusual historic marker, a really cool Section 106 project, and a reader submitted Shout Out. If you’re still looking for something to do while you cool down, catch up on any older posts that you might have missed and, if you haven’t already, take our Community Connections online survey to help inform Pennsylvania’s next statewide historic preservation plan. We’re at 1600 responses already! I really want to break last time’s record of 2,200 and I think we can do it. Continue reading
Great news for fans of Pennsylvania’s beloved blue and gold markers – there are going to be more of them soon! At the March 9th meeting, the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission recently approved 23 new historical markers. Many of the marker applications and approvals were from Philadelphia County this year so we’re anxious to get some great nominations next year for subjects of statewide and/or national significance in Pennsylvania’s other 66 counties! The Marker Program encourages broad distribution, so individuals and organizations from across the commonwealth are encouraged to research their history and develop nominations for people, places, events, and innovations in their own area. We know there is more history out there to share!
