Historic Preservation Specialist
THE POSITION:
This position supports and maintains the Commonwealth’s historic building survey, including maintaining the integrity of the historic property information in the Cultural Resources Geographic Information System (CRGIS) and facilitating new surveys in order to assist the PHMC, other agencies, and the public in evaluating the historic resources within the state and the effects of various programs on those resources. The incumbent digitizes data from the bureau’s legacy paper records and all newly recorded cultural resources into a computerized Geographic Information System (GIS) program. These duties include computerized mapping of cultural resources including historic property and district locations from both paper and outside electronic sources; entering and updating resource information; and facilitating the scanning, processing, and storage of resource images for linkage into CRGIS.
DESCRIPTION OF WORK:
The incumbent:
Assists in the development and oversight of the Pennsylvania Historic Buildings Survey Plan, field test survey guidelines, and documentation standards. Assists with the administration of the Commonwealth’s historic buildings survey, including: working with the public, local governments, and local preservation partners on developing survey methodology; coordinating and conducting field work; providing training on survey techniques and data collection; and the preparation and maintenance of paper and electronic records. Develops and maintains a list of survey priorities; coordinates the completion of surveys with other PHMC program areas and partners as appropriate. Conducts projects that analyze legacy data. This can result in updating information to meet current standards and needs and/or providing new interpretations. This includes historic research and evaluation and may include guiding and assisting interns or other researchers. Develops and provides public information about cultural resources through research, analysis, and development of web content, conference and educational programs, and periodic reports. Provides information and assistance to citizens and agencies involved in the identification and survey of cultural resources to prepare resource information and documentation for inclusion in the CRGIS. This can include extracting data from the CRGIS to fill data requests and working with other agencies to facilitate data sharing agreements. Participates in the evaluation of the significance of cultural resources and their eligibility for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. Performs other duties as required.

Required Experience:
Two or more years of experience working on an architectural survey, an architectural restoration and preservation project or program, and a bachelor’s degree in architectural history, American history, art history, or course work in Pennsylvania history; OR Any equivalent combination of experience and training.
