The next entry in PA SHPO’s #FavoritePAPlaces campaign is Melinda Meyer, Board of Director’s President of Preservation Erie, talking about why Jr’s Comedy Club in Erie, Erie County is one of her favorite Pennsylvania places.

Jr’s Comedy Club AKA the Reliable Home Furnishing Company

Although 1402 State (formerly Turnpike) Street in Erie has been the home of Jr’s Comedy Club for some time, the building was originally built for the Reliable Home Furnishing Company.

Advertised as “the Pride of Erie”, the Reliable Home Furnishing Company building was constructed in 1909 and housed the company store and offices. They sold a variety of household goods, including carpets, stoves, curtains and more. Reliable moved from its State Street home in the late 1950s/early 1960s and the building then operated as Masiroff & Company and later Furnitureland.

Junior’s Last Laugh Comedy Club – predecessor of Jr’s Comedy Club – renovated the building around 2000 and moved into the lower floors.
