Historical Marker Nominations Due Soon! – Saturday, December 1, 2018

Holiday season at the PA SHPO means all the usual stuff – parties, presents, and vacations – but it also means its time for Historical Marker applications!

December 1, 2018 is the final date for individuals, public agencies, and private organizations to submit nominations for properties or locations with statewide or national historical significance for consideration in the State Historical Marker Program for 2019.

This marker in Tioga County celebrates the poet and conservationist George Washington Sears’ writings about the Pine Creek Gorge under his pen name “Nessmuk”.

Since 1914, PHMC’s historical markers have chronicled the people, places and events that have affected the lives of Pennsylvanians over the centuries and is one of the PHMC’s most visible public history initiatives. The more than 2,500 markers feature a multitude of noteworthy subjects such as Native Americans and settlers, government and politics, athletes, entertainers, artists, struggles for freedom and equality, and factories and businesses.  You can browse through the list of recently approved markers in this post from April 2018.

A few things to note…

Nominations should be submitted by December 1, 2018. Send completed nominations to State Historical Marker Program, Pennsylvania State Historic Preservation Office, PHMC, 400 North St., Second Floor, Harrisburg, PA 17120-0053.

Fiscal Year 2018-2019 PA Historic Tax Credit Application Opening Date – Friday December 14, 2018

We have received confirmation from the Department of Community and Economic Development that the opening date for FY 2018-19 PA HTC applications is Friday December 14, 2018. As a first-come, first-served program, we highly recommend that you submit your applications on that date. Program guidelines are available at https://dced.pa.gov/programs/historic-preservation-tax-credit-hptc/.

Millworks in Harrisburg used the federal and state historic tax credit programs to rehab this former industrial building into a bar, restaurant, and arts gallery.

If your project has prior federal Part 1 and Part 2 applications submitted to and reviewed by PA SHPO and NPS, you do need to complete the DCED ESA Single application at https://www.esa.dced.state.pa.us and complete and upload the PHMC Part 1 and Part 2 application cover sheets to the ESA system. But you do not need to submit supplemental application materials (P1/P2 narrative descriptions, photographs, architectural plans, etc…) as those are on file with our office.

If you have a new project, you must submit a complete Part 1 and Part 2 application for review. If you intend to apply for both the federal and state programs, I strongly recommend that you submit your federal application for review as soon as possible to help expedite your state review in December 2018/January 2019.

For questions about the PA Historic Tax Credit, please contact Scott Doyle at midoyle@pa.gov or 717-783-6012.

PA Statewide Conference on Heritage Session Proposals Due Soon! – Monday, December 17

Please join us for “Preservation Summer School 2019” as we dip into questions and concepts from the statewide historic preservation plan, #PreservAtionHappensHere.  The conference will be held at Wilson College in Chambersburg, Franklin County on June 19 through 21, 2019.

Successful proposals will provide meaningful learning opportunities and should aspire to go beyond a simple narrative or case study of a project. Conference attendees should feel they have gained a new perspective or learned a new approach. Click below for more detailed descriptions of the theme and categories for submission, plus the submission pdf.

Each conference session runs 75-minutes and should help address one of three thought-provoking questions from the state plan (more information below). Sessions may feature a single speaker or two to three speakers and a moderator. All sessions should allow time for audience participation/Q&A.

For more information and to download the submission form, go to http://preservationpa.org/uploads/PresPA-Summer-School-Session-RFP.pdf.

Share what you’re thankful for this holiday season with the #PreservAtionHappensHere hashtag!

Over the next two months, you will likely find yourself out and about a lot enjoying holiday events, travelling to see friends and family, and shopping – hopefully in one of Pennsylvania’s legacy businesses or historic downtowns!.  We know that preservation is happening every day across the commonwealth, and it won’t come to halt during this holiday season!

If you see preservation happening in your community or one you’re visiting, please tell everyone about it by posting it on your social media accounts and using the #PreservAtionHappensHere hashtag.  In this season of being thankful, it’s an easy way to show your gratitude for all the hard work that goes into saving and celebrating Pennsylvania’s older and historic places.

Here is an example of #preservationhappenshere in action!

And, don’t forget the bonus! Organizations, places, and people who use the hashtag are automatically considered for a 2019 Community Initiative Award!

Happy Thanksgiving from the PA SHPO!
