It’s almost spring in Washington, D.C. and for us here at the PA SHPO it doesn’t mean cherry blossoms – it means Advocacy Week! Next week, Pennsylvania’s Preservation Delegation heads south to talk about one of our favorite topics (historic preservation!) in a fresh new way (with videos!) and we are ready to go.

This month I am switching up our usual format to provide you with a two-part Shout Out about the great work happening at the Dennis Farm, an 18th century African American farm in northeastern Pennsylvania. It makes sense to learn more about this amazing place during African American History Month from Denise Dennis, President & CEO of the Dennis Farm Charitable Trust, which is the farm’s 21st century caretaker.
Each year, the nonprofit Preservation Pennsylvania releases a list of new additions to the Pennsylvania At Risk list, sites determined to be among the commonwealth’s most endangered historic resources. In 2017, eleven places were identified through nominations submitted by the public, and will become Preservation Pennsylvania’s work priorities for the year.
Preservation Pennsylvania has issued a Call for Sessions Proposals for the 2017 Statewide Conference on Heritage. This year the conference will be held in the historic downtown of Carlisle Pennsylvania on June 14-16th, 2017.
Did anyone else hear Richard Dawson’s voice yell this out when they read the title of our post today? Perhaps I’m dating myself by knowing who first hosted Family Feud. We didn’t host our own preservation version of one of America’s favorite game shows (but that’s an idea!) but we did host a survey and the results are in!
This month’s Shout Out includes great news about PA’s new National Historic Landmarks, some cool stuff in Cumberland County, and some new research projects!
Car barns are a historic remnant of a bygone era. The Johnstown Car Barns, located at 630 and 716 Central Avenue in Johnstown are no exception. Built in 1893 to service and store trolleys, these building help communicate the story of public transportation in Cambria County. The historic car barns are being offered for sale, allowing for a unique opportunity to adaptively reuse the buildings so they can be retained as an important landmark in the community.
