Today’s Spotlight: Naomi Naylor
The next entry in PA SHPO’s #FavoritePAPlaces campaign is Naomi Naylor, executive director of Quakertown Alive!, talking about why the Karlton Cafe in Quakertown, Bucks County is one of her favorite Pennsylvania places.
Karlton Cafe
The Karlton Cafe is a local landmark in the heart of Quakertown Borough, Bucks County. Much of downtown Quakertown – including the building which houses the Karlton Cafe – is included in the Quakertown Historic District (Key #127042). This large district was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2011 and includes over 2,200 contributing buildings, sites, and structures ranging in age from ca. 1750 to ca. 1950.
The cafe is located in the former Karlton Theater on West Broad Street. One of three movie theaters in the borough, the Karlton opened in 1923 showing the movies “Peg o’ My Heart” and “Hunting Big Game.” It closed as theater in 1967 and today houses the cafe and other businesses.
