In this edition of Just Listed! we are celebrating Black History Month by highlighting Lincoln Cemetery (PA-SHARE RE #1999RE00677) which was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in September 2025.
First established on a 1/2-acre plot in 1867 by the “Sons of Goodwill,’ the land later called “Lincoln Cemetery” became the principal burial ground for Gettysburg’s African American community for the next 100 years.
The cemetery has over 400 burials, including 29 veterans of the United States Colored Troops buried here because they were denied burial in the National Cemetery because of their race.
Many of Gettysburg’s most prominent African American citizens also lie buried here, including Lloyd Watts, the first teacher of the town’s “Colored School,” John Hopkins, the “well-loved janitor” of Gettysburg College during the Civil War, and Abraham Brian, whose farm was the focus of much of the fighting along Cemetery Ridge at “The Bloody Angle” on July 3, 1863.

The cemetery is now being restored by the Lincoln Cemetery Project Association whose goal is to restore, preserve, and provide continuing care for the historic African American cemetery. Their mission is to bring proper honor and dignity to those buried there.Because of the cemetery’s story, it was listed in the National Register under Criterion A for Ethnic Heritage – Black for its association with Gettysburg’s African American community and for Social History as an example of African American agency in 19th and early 20th century Gettysburg, with a POS from 1867 to 1970. The cemetery was listed under the African American Churches and Cemeteries MPDF (PA-SHARE Report #2021RP00051) as an example of an Independent Cemetery property subtype with both legacy and caretaker burials.
Along with Lincoln Cemetery, a variety of Pennsylvania places from across the Commonwealth were listed in the National Register of Historic Places in the second half of 2025. These fourteen properties include places associated with transportation, architecture, industry, commerce, healthcare, neighborhoods, and religion.
